Patience is a Virtue

Patience and persistence are the key areas that i'll talk about in this blog. I'll try and highlight two examples that best show this in the following paragraphs.

Firstly there's the act of getting to the destination for a sunrise, something which is a lot harder then it sounds. Being prepared and planning everything the day before is essential, however the biggest obstacle is that it can be very easy to look out of the window in the morning and persuade yourself that the weather isn't going to be good enough for photography. On Sunday morning I rolled out of bed at 4:50 am, forcing myself to get up and have a look out of the window, things didn't look great, a totally clear sky something that often yields a boring sunrise. With this in mind I was beginning to convince myself going back to bed was the wisest option, however something made me decide to go to my destination anyway, Bamburgh Castle on the Northumberland coast. As Bamburgh neared I realised that there may be some cloud on the horizon, my spirit lifted as I began to realise that despite my initial reservations this was going to be a good morning of photography. The photograph above and below are the result of this said morning. I hope they go to show that it was worth my while battling against my initial thought of staying in bed! What it proves is that perseverance and persistence can pay off.

On the other side of the coin we have Friday night. I travelled to the Newcastle Quayside to photograph the Millenium Bridge and Tyne Bridge because the weather appeared good enough to produce a sunset of worth. This is what I saw 20 minutes before the sun went down

From past experience I thought to myself that there's no way that band of cloud will allow colours of a sunset to come through, and that my time would be wasted photographing this scene. With this in mind I was just about to pack my things away when a little bit of colour started to break through, I decided that maybe it would be worth waiting another 20mins to see what happens. The photograph below shows what a stunning sunset I was presented with, and teaches a valuable lesson for landscape photographers, just a little bit more patience and you will be rewarded. This image will work really well as a panoramic canvas print.

It also emphasises a quote from another landscape photographer who simply said 'get out more, take less.' This is something I'll certainly be thinking about in the coming months, being versatile is the key meaning that no matter what the conditions are, you should be able work around this and get a good photograph somehow.
