"Birdoswald Roman Fort, Hadrian's Wall, Cumbria" by Roger Clegg

Catalogue number: HW1100

The western end of the central section of Hadrian's Wall, with its distinctive dramatic crags, falls away close to the Northumberland / Cumbria border making way for the beautiful pastoral scenery of north Cumbria. Birdoswald Roman Fort (Banna) is the best preserved Hadrian's Wall Fort in Cumbria. In later centuries it was also in the heart of Border Riever territory with the notorious Armstrong name. With the legendary Roman Military Commander Lucius Artorus Castus this area also lays claim to the most likely source of the legend of King Arthur.
