"Newcastle Quayside Bridges, Newcastle Upon Tyne" by Andrew Whitaker
Catalogue number: N035M
The Newcastle and Gateshead quayside is home to numerous bridges crossing the River Tyne, most famous is the Tyne Bridge built in 1928. Before this Robert Stephenson's High level bridge of 1849 was the worlds first road/rail bridge. The Swing Bridge was first opened in 1876 and much more recently the Millennium bridge opened in 2001. Over recent years the quayside has seen a regeneration program which, with the help of the Sage building and the Baltic Gallery, has transformed the area into an important regional centre for Art.
