Winter's Gibbet, Elsdon, Northumberland

"Winter's Gibbet, Elsdon, Northumberland " by Roger Clegg

Catalogue number: NT400

In 1791 Margaret Crozier was murdered by William Winter near Elsdon, Northumberland. William Winter and two accomplices were tried and hanged in Newcastle. William Winter's body was subsequently hung in chains at the Steng Cross, an ancient boundary stone on the old drovers' road south-east of Elsdon as a macabre warning to others.
